International Day of Parliamentary Action

International Day of Parliamentary Action

The International Day of Parliamentary Action is celebrated annually on June 30, the date on which the Inter-Parliamentary Union was founded in 1889. The United Nations General Assembly, by its resolution 72/278, adopted this annual international occasion in May 2018 in recognition of the role that Parliamentarians are involved in national plans and strategies and ensure greater transparency and accountability at the global and local levels.
facts and figures:
• Every country in the world has a form of government that is representative of the people.
• Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: a bicameral parliament (two chambers of parliament) and a unicameral parliament (one chamber).
• Of the 193 member countries of the United Nations, 79 countries have a two-chamber parliament and 114 countries have a unicameral parliament, which means that there are 272 parliamentary rooms in which 46,000 parliamentarians are active.
• Women represent 26.2 percent of all parliamentarians in the world.
• Although nearly 39 percent of the world's population is between the ages of 20 and 39, the proportion of members of Parliament in this category is only 17.5 percent.
