International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances

International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances

Today, on the occasion of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, we the 31 undersigned local, regional, and international organizations, associations, and networks come together to highlight the dramatic and persistent nature of enforced disappearances in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and the accompanying impunity enjoyed by perpetrators of these crimes throughout the region.
State and non-state actors continue to perpetrate the crime of enforced disappearance across the MENA region, including against women, children, and vulnerable groups. Often, enforced disappearances take place alongside other egregious human rights abuses, including torture, ill-treatment, sexual and gender-based violence, and extrajudicial executions. Enforced disappearances leave devastating psychological, economic and social impacts on survivors and family members, as well as on society as a whole.
