The “Zakat Authority” affiliated with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham imposes zakat on “forged olives”

Activists circulated a link to the General Authority for Zakat of the Salvation Government operating in the areas controlled by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, in which it imposes zakat on olives collected by the poor from the remnants of the crop from which olives were harvested by their owners, which is called “Al-Ma’far”.

Al-Wasl bears the date of November 20 from the Haydan press, weighing 69 kg, and 3.45 kg was collected as zakat. It also bears the name of the recipient, called Muhammad Barakat.

The Salvation Government formed the Zakat Authority in 2019, and the Zakat Authority takes 5% of the olive crop from the people of Idlib as zakat from them, despite the deterioration of living due to the Salvation Government’s inability to support basic materials, control prices and its inability to break the monopoly on the fuel market and some basic imports, which increased the price of bread in addition For the rest of the basic food commodities due to the monopoly and the global cost of commodities.

In March 2019, the city of Kafr Takharim witnessed security tension after demonstrations against the committees of the Zakat Authority, which came to collect them from olive presses in the city and its suburbs.

The Minister of Justice in the Salvation Government, Ibrahim Shasho, had stipulated that olives reach 673 kg as the zakat threshold, one-tenth of which would be taken out of the land was irrigated without cost, and half a tenth if irrigated at a cost. But in such a complex, lengthy, and sometimes expensive way that the majority of people do not ask for a refund.
