After the start of the Syrian revolution in March 2011, movements began outside Syria of activists and personalities, some of whom were known to oppose the Assad regime, father and son. The goal of these movements was to form a body that reflects the demands of the popular movement, organizes it, and secures a network of communication with states and international actors in an attempt to isolate the regime.
