A celebration on the occasion of International Midwifery Day in northwest Syria

Female midwifery students at SAMS Medical Technical Institute organized a celebration on the occasion of International Midwifery Day, at the institute in Atarib city.
The celebration included introducing the International Midwifery Day, the history of midwifery and the seven competencies of midwifery, with the rules of the code of conduct and introducing leading midwives, in addition to two visits to the city hospital in Kili and Al-Iman Hospital in Sarmada.
During the two rounds, the International Midwifery Day and the history of midwifery were introduced, as well as the role of midwifery, maternal and newborn care, and midwifery competencies, in addition to introducing gender-based violence.
Hospital midwives were honored and gifts and thank you cards were given to them. The introductory visit to the International Midwifery Day in Kili camp included several activities such as checking vital signs and measuring the weight and height of pregnant women, as well as providing awareness brochures for family planning services, pregnant nutrition, and others. In addition to inviting midwives in northern Syria to attend a meeting via the ZOOM application and discuss the most important roles of the midwife and the most important challenges facing the work of the midwife under these circumstances
Professor Abdel Karim Barakat, Director of SAMS Medical Technical Institute, says about the importance of the activity: “To emphasize the importance of the role of midwifery under harsh conditions and to give it more attention to its critical role between life and the safety of the mother and the newborn.”
Regarding the purpose of the celebration, Ms. Safaa Al-Saleh, assistant director for midwifery affairs, says: “Through the ceremony, we aim to introduce the work of midwives, its importance and role in society, and how much the midwifery profession has developed through the ages.
Ms. Safaa sends a message to the students on the occasion of this day: “I wish them continued success and to be highly skilled and experienced midwives to help women and children, especially under these circumstances, and to always strive for continuous education and development of the midwifery profession because it is considered a humanitarian profession in the first degree.”
The midwifery student at our institute, Taghreed Al-Hussein, commented about her participation in organizing the ceremony: “It is the first time that I participate in an event like this, so I feel proud that I am one of the organizers of the activity, and I am proud to contribute to conveying the voice and message of midwives to all segments of society.
