Resolution 1820 is the first resolution dealing with sexual violence as a tool of war. It also draws attention to the link between sexual violence and the need to increase women's participation, the most prominent of which are:
- Strengthening the protection of women
- Strengthening advocacy activities
- Support for victims of sexual violence
- Fighting impunity and promoting accountability.
- Enhancing women's participation at the local level.
- Increasing the representation of women and applying a gender perspective in peace processes.
