Maryam, a 55 year-old mother of 9, struggled to find treatment for the facial pain she had suffered for most of her life. After fleeing to Turkey at the beginning of the conflict in Syria, she was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia, a chronic pain condition affecting the nerve that carries sensation from the face to the brain. Maryam struggled to access the operation she needed to repair it. Maryam recently returned to Syria, and was advised to go to SAMS-supported Bab Al-Hawa Hospital. Staff there were able to successfully operate, repairing her trigeminal nerve and putting an end to the constant pain she’d lived with for so many years. Chronic conditions like Maryam’s are often costly, and accessing treatment is difficult for refugees and IDPs. SAMS is proud to support patients suffering from chronic conditions free of charge, making dignified, quality care more accessible.
