Ensuring access to educational opportunities is critical to SAMS’ mission of supporting sustainable health systems in the communities where we work. Duha al-Akhras, a recent graduate of SAMS’ Termanin Midwifery Institute in northwest #Syria, always knew she wanted to work in medicine and help save lives. After working as a nurse, she realized she wanted to focus on maternity care to support the women and children in her community, and decided to become a midwife. After graduating from SAMS’ midwifery program in 2020, she began serving as a midwife at Qah Maternity Hospital. She explained her decision to become a midwife, stating, “It’s a sense of responsibility that has driven me to help and care for these women and children while also doing my best to improve my skills and increase my knowledge so that I can continue helping my community.”
