Session: Honor and its connection with woman's virginity
Why is a woman's honor always linked to her virginity? A question that is still up for debate
The Syrian Women's Council, Qamishli office, organized the second session of an out-of-the-ordinary project entitled "Honor and its linkage with women's virginity", at the council's headquarters today 9/1/2022.
The session was attended by representatives of civil society organizations, women's institutions, and independent media professionals.
The session began with a question: Why is a woman’s honor always linked to her virginity??... The entire intervention agreed that honor is not related to women only, but men as well, as men are always accused of their honor and we live in a society where women have the honor of men, so they are stigmatized. Thus, societal ideas, the level of awareness, and culture play a role in this issue.
The session was moderated by the general coordinator of the Syrian Women's Council Lina Barakat, who raised questions about the role of the media in highlighting this issue, as well as the contribution of civil society organizations to awareness, based on her view that the woman's body belongs to her.
Perhaps most of the answers were related to the difficulty of accessing these topics and the inability to discuss them despite the presence of media that highlighted them, but they were not discussed, and during the session, a lesson was proposed for sexual education to raise awareness in such areas.
