Who are we:
The Local Councils Unit was established in February 2013 by a group of Syrian experts and specialists, who believe in the necessity of the correct application of the principle of local administration to advance Syrian society by giving an effective role to local communities in managing their affairs, facilities, and resources through local administrative and service units at the governorate and city levels. centers, towns, and villages.

At the beginning of its establishment, the unit worked as one of the units under the umbrella of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, and during that period it completed many services and projects inside Syrian territory, then its work evolved to form the nucleus that formed the work team of the Ministry of Local Administration in the Syrian Interim Government.

As a result of the acceleration of events and changes on the ground and the increasing complexity of the Syrian scene, the unit underwent a series of structural changes to develop its tools and develop its capabilities to achieve a rapid and emergency response to the requirements of the Syrian reality, with the development of the vision and strategic objectives of the unit, which made it, as a result, an independent non-governmental organization, It seeks to empower local government and develop its tools to advance the Syrian society towards a better tomorrow.

Mission

Consolidating the concept of local governance, developing its institutions, and activating its practices and tools to serve the Syrian society, by providing a package of capacity-building programs and qualifying cadres working in local councils, developing and following up its projects according to the unit’s standard performance indicators, in addition to providing legal advice and building an effective network of relationships and communication. The local councils link themselves with each other on the one hand, and with Syrian and international bodies and organizations, on the other hand, to contribute to building the desired Syrian society.

Independence: The unity of the local councils is an independent organization, whose will, national identity and Syrian affiliation command its compass to serve its goals and achieve its aspirations in building a better Syrian tomorrow.
